I had just arrived to Varanasi, India, on an extremely hot and humid summer night. I walked down to the river to find this man sitting on his boat alone amongst a group of vacant boats. We peacefully coasted up and down the river before coming upon a couple of fires at shore that were burning two people who had recently died. Dozens of people, dressed in white, surrounded the fires as they paid their final respects.

His pride of being a warrior really chills me here. They may be young, but they are intense and embrace their leadership role. South Horr, Kenya.

This is a warrior, or moran, of the Samburu Tribe in Kenya. Just moments before this photo, a group of warriors performed traditional dances. Before becoming a moran, each boy must undergo circumcision at around the age of 15. They must not show any signs of pain during the procedure, or they will not be considered worthy of being a moran, and instead they will live a life full of shame.

As I was listening to a guide about the history of the area, I turned around to see a monk walking to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in the Old City in Jerusalem, Israel, which was directly behind me. The Church of the Holy Sepulchre is built over one of the places that Christians believe Jesus was crucified.

South Horr, Kenya. An elderly Samburu woman cares for her grandson her son's home. In Samburu culture, It is acceptable for men to have multiple wives. This usually results in the men leaving the older wives for younger ones, which is what happened to this woman. She now spends most of her time with her son's family.

Jaipur, Rajasthan, India

This is Radha, a beautiful young woman that lives in a rag picking community in Jaipur. Millions of people in India make a living rag picking. They collect trash, sort it, and resell it. They live in the middle of all the trash they collect. The living conditions are extremely poor and unsanitary. Despite the poor environment, women are dignified and wear bright and beautiful clothing and care for their growing families. Sadly, shortly after this photo was taken, her husband died of illness.

South Horr, Kenya. Young girls in the Samburu Tribe are expected to carry their siblings on their backs all day to help their mothers. The sense of duty on her face is chilling.
